iPage Domain Name Registration Services

When it comes to iPage domain services, there are several things you should know. The first is that iPage offers five distinct domain services, which are discussed in more detail below. The other thing to note is that iPage has a special Domain section of its Help Center that provides getting started, trouble-shooting, and tutorials all on the subject of iPage domains.

Domain Registration—iPage registers domains in three categories.

  • Classic Domains include those with the extensions .com, .net, .org, .biz., .ca., .name, .info., .co.uk, .org.uk, and .us. These are priced at $12.99 for one year. Both .uk extensions require a minimum registration of 2 years on renewal.
  • Geographic Domains include those with the extensions .be, .de, and .eu. These are $16.95 for one year.
  • Premium Domains include those with the extensions .cc, .ch, .co, .mobi, and .tv. These are priced at $34.95 for one year, with the .mobi extension requiring a minimum registration of 2 years on renewal.

Domain Transfer—Domains currently registered elsewhere can be transferred so that they are hosted on iPage. After you let iPage know that you wish to transfer a domain to be hosted at iPage, you will need to contact the domain name registrar you used to register the domain and either change the nameservers yourself, or ask a support representative to help you do so. iPage has a link to the Whois search at InterNIC to help you identify the registrar of your domain name if you don’t remember this information.

• Domain PrivacyThe iPage domain privacy system protects your personal information when you register a domain. This includes identifiying the administrator of the domain, as well as contact information for billing and technical issues. If you sign up for this service, which costrs $8.99 per year, iPage will substitute information that allows contact with you to be made through iPage, rather than directly. If there are any contacts made related to your site, iPage will forward them to you, and you can respond as you see fit.

Using iPage’s privacy service may protect you from spam, attempts at identify theft, and unwanted contact. However, even if you invoke domain privacy, you must give accurate information when you register your domain and update that information when necessary. Domain privacy is available only for certain extensions. These are: .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .name, .cc, .tv.

Subdomains—If you are using the iPage UNIX platform and are willing to pay for the privilege, you can use subdomains on your iPage-hosted website. The cost is $5 per month for 5 subdomains, $10 per month for 10 subdomains, and $25 per month for unlimited subdomains.

Automated Domain Renewals—iPage customers can sign up for automated domain renewals. This is a free service.

iPage FTP Hosting Connection Details

iPage FTP refers to the FTP web hosting feature included in all iPage web hosting packages.  FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, allows website owners to give other users permission to upload or download files to their website. This article explains ipage FTP and how it works.

FTP, which stands for File Transfer Protocol, is one way to connect the computer you are using or an external hard drive or other device to your website in order to upload files and scripts and/or download files. Another way is SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) and a third way is to use a file manager, and iPage offers both an FileManager and SFTP as part of its plan, and—in fact—recommends the use of SFTP, but we’re just going to discuss FTP here.

Although iPage doesn’t specify in its features list, according to a Live Chat technical support agent, you can have unlimited FTP users. An FTP user is a login that allows FTP access to your sites various directories. By having different users, you can others in your organization access to distinct portions of the site that they need, and restrict access to directories that have sensitive information and/or that you do not want changed by accident. Upon signing up for an iPage web hosting plan, a main account for FTP will be set up by default. According to the iPage Help Center, setting up additional users should be done by contacting the iPage Help Center to give you assistance.

You will need an FTP client in order to connect to your directories on iPage. Examples of FTP clients include FileZilla, Transmit, Fugu, and Fetch. Like other software applications, FTP clients may be operating system specific, so be sure to find an FTP client that is made for your computer’s OS.

You will also need to enter a group of settings in your FTP client in order to contact iPage. These settings are listed on your FTP Management page, and if you log in, you will see them. How they will appear in your particular FTP client may differ somewhat, but they will include the Host Address, the Host Type, the User ID you wish to use, and the corresponding Password. The Host Address is formed by appending <ftp.> in front of your primary domain URL. The Host Type you should choose is “Automatic detect.” If you have not created multiple FTP users, you will use the master FTP user name, which is your account’s user name, unless you have changed it. It will be listed on your FTP management page. Likewise, the password is your account’s password unless you have changed it. If there is a choice in your FTP client, you should connect to iPage in Passive Mode.

When you have made all the necessary arrangements, there will be a connect button for you to click, and when you are connected, you will be able to see the directory structure of your own computer on the left, and the directory structure of your site in the right-hand panel. In order to upload a file or folder, you will locate it on your local computer (left) and drag it into the appropriate part of your site directory on the right. This can go more smoothly if you open the folder where you want to place the material prior to dragging. To download files or folders from your website, drag the file from its location in the site directory to the location on your local computer where you want to see it. This process copies, rather than move, files and folders. Depending on the size of the file or folder, the process may be extremely quick, or take awhile. For lengthier uploads and downloads, an indicator is usually provided.

Introduction to iPage Templates

Using a template is undoubtedly the quickest way to get a standards-compliant, functional website up and ready to go in a jiffy. For someone new to the job of webmastering, website templates answer questions you didn’t even know you had. For more advanced users, templates can be selected for some key features and modified to suit your needs. In either case, with the programming of the underlying elements complete, adding branding elements and replacing the “under construction” sign can happen in short order. Pros can develop starting with a blank site and build it themselves from scratch. It’s important to know that templates can allow for greater or lesser change by the user. One person’s useful template may be too inflexible for someone else, but you only have to please yourself.

Some templates have everything in place for you and all you have to do is choose:

  • a color scheme
  • a font
  • images to replace the template placeholders

and write text to replace the placeholder text. If you are setting up an ecommerce website, as opposed to a personal site, you will have to do more work, setting up your catalogue, pricing, and shipping options.

Using iPage Templates

SiteDelux has different technical requirements than the vDeck control panel, so it’s important to note them before you get going in order to prevent mishaps.

• Windows users must use the Windows 2000 operating system or later. They must have a monitor with a screen resolution that is at least 800 x 600. They must use Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher or Firefox 1.5 or higher as their browser.

• Mac users must use the Mac OS X 10.4 operating system or later. They must use Firefox 1.5 or higher (Internet Explorer is no longer supported for Mac, and Google Chrome is not supported by SiteDelux).

Several Types of iPage Templates

iPages template-based site builder and editor is called SiteDelux. SiteDelux was created to help people get websites online in under an hour. Available in the Website Management section of your control panel, SiteDelux is a browser-based editor, with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface, requiring no programming, or coding, knowledge. It is aimed at use by those setting up personal sites and small business sites.

Some people may jump to the conclusion that the beginning and end of iPage templates is the iPage site builder, SiteDelux, but this is not the case. The Content Management System (CMS) software applications Drupal, Joomla!, and Mambo, for example, all make it possible to build a website based on provided templates. This is also true for the blogging software WordPress, and for other software applications that iPage provides to its customers through InstallCentral or Simple Scripts (the documentation refers to both). In these programs, templates can be free or purchased. Additionally, sites can be enhanced through a variety of add-ons including those called modules and those called plug-ins.

Features and Benefits of the iPage Control Panel

• In the account and billing section, you can make a payment, update your billing information, or change your password, for example, as well as access our billing history.

• In the domain section, you can add and transfer domains, and manage subdomains.

• In the website management section, you can access a variety of tools, from a drag-and-drop website builder, Weebly Drag and Drop, to FTP tools. SimpleScripts not only provides one-click installation, but it also does a great job of keeping up with the latest updates and providing notifications through your iPage control panel.

• In the email section you can set up, manage, and access email accounts and webmail, set forwarding and autoresponders, and your business email service, such as Constant Contact, etc.

• In the ecommerce section, you can access shopping cart and payment acceptance options such as PayPal integration.

• In the marketing services section, you can promote your site, starting off with the free Google Adwords credit, Yahoo! search credit, and Facebook advertising credit that come with your iPage Essentials plan, and building from there. You can also access premium services, such as logo design or search engine optimization.

iPage Webmail Services Available

iPage Webmail is available from any Internet connection. With iPage Webmail you always have access to your email.  This article helps define what webmail its, how webmail works, and tips on using iPage Webmail via the Web or your iPage control panel.

What Is Webmail?

A webmail client is a way of viewing your email while online. It widens your reach, allowing you to check your email, send email, and perform other operations from any web browser on any computer anywhere you can reach an Internet connection. By way of contrast, email clients store your email on a specific device (though syncing between devices is possible), and allow you to access your messages offline. They also offer a wider array of features.

Webmail clients include Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! mail, as well as AtMail and  SquirrelMail, both offered by iPage, and both accessible through MailCentral, your iPage mail delivery system.

AtMail is a proprietary webmail client designed for purchase by ISPs, webhosts, etc., who then supply it to their clients without charge. It has a web-based address book and calendar, as well as IMAP support. If you have Outlook, you can configure it to access your AtMail accounts and syncing. If you choose to do this, a ‘Webmail Sync’ button will appear on your toolbar after Outlook is restarted.

SquirrelMail increased its cachet with not one, but two mentions in the movie The Social Network. SquirrelMail is a free open source software. iPage provides it for users, along with 5 plug-ins that include a Calendar, an AddressBook with import ant export features, HTML mail, and image buttons. You can access the SquirrelMail User’s Manual through the SquirrelMail website at: http://squirrelmail.org/docs/user/user.html  Be aware that it you use Internet Explorer, you will have to log-in twice. This is a known issue, but does not happen with other browsers, such as Firefox.

To select or change iPage webmail clients, follow these steps, keeping in mind that if you switch from one client to another, you will lose any iPage webmail that has not been downloaded to a computer, as data is not transferred between clients, and that you will need to move calendar and address book data manually:

  • Log-in to your iPage hosting account control panel and go to MailCentral.
  • Log-in to the ‘Mail Tool Settings’ page.
  • Find the ‘WebMail Client’ section.
  • Choose the radio button of the WebMail Client you wish to a) enable or b) switch to.
  • Select ‘Change Settings.’

iPage Webmail through MailCentral

MailCentral is an iPage webmail option on your iPage hosting account control panel. Through it, it is possible to reach whichever webmail client you have selected. To reach it, take the following steps:

  • Log-in to your iPage account.
  • Go to MailCentral on your vDeck control panel.
  • Choose a mailbox to check.
  • Click the ‘Edit’ button. The Address Management Page will appear.
  • Expand the section called ‘Mailbox Delivery,’ and then click the icon for ‘Webmail.’

The iPage webmail client that you have chosen to use will open.

  • Use the email address and chosen password to log into the mailbox.

iPage Webmail over the Web

In order to access your iPage webmail without having to log-in to your iPage control panel or your iPage hosting account, insert <webmail.> before your hosting domain name in the address window of a web browser. Log-in with the full address and password of the mailbox you wish to access.
